There are smart ways to get a good job through a vocational education in Sweden. Vocational education is where you’ll learn the skills and knowledge needed for a specific job or profession. There are diffentent ways to go for you as an adult.

Study

Yes, I have complete grades from upper secondary school.

Then Yrkeshögskolan, translated to Higher vocational education, is something for you. Yrkeshögskolan is a post-secondary form of education. It combines theoretical and practical studies in close cooperation with employers and industry. There are different courses in different crafts and professions. Most education forms are 1-2 years.

It is up to the school do decide the level on Swedish required for the courses.

No, I have not complete grades from upper secondary school

Then you can choose a vocational education on the same level as upper secondary school, but for adults. The courses are provided by the municipal education, called komvux, in your home municipality. The term for such an education is Yrkesvux. At Yrkesvux, you’ll always learn through practical work under guidance from a supervisor. That means you can work at a real workplace during your education, to learn the craft and get your own contacts in the business. After finishing Yrkesvux, you get grades correspondent to upper secondary school level.

Validation

You can get your previous education/grades validated. Sometimes it is enough to translate the grades and achieved knowledge. But most of the times, some courses need to be completed and added to the education for it to correspond with the Swedish education system.

 

If you want to work: 

If you have been working in another country and want to continue your profession in Sweden, you might be able to look for a job without validating your knowledge or go to school. However, some professions are regulated and therefore needs education and/or validation. You might need to confirm your skills. This is where validation comes in handy. Read more »

Interested in a higher vocational education, but don’t have the necessary grades and certificates? You might get accepted anyways, if you can show that you have previous experience and skills in the profession. Find out more below. Read more »

Salaries and safety

Sweden has many rules and laws regulating the working environment. We have an authority department just to prevent work related injuries, called Arbetsmiljöverket. For example, in some trades one is required to wear protective gear. Read more »
